Position Summary

To assist in directing and coordinating all safety and health related activities for the facility. To prevent occupational injury/illness related losses and minimize future liabilities by evaluating risks and establishing appropriate loss control/reduction activities. To promote and support the facility's line-driven safety process. To assist department and plant management in achieving their safety and business objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive safety management system. This includes providing leadership and being a resource to the Safety and Health Manager and the line organization.
  • Oversee the workers' compensation claims process by establishing a thorough and aggressive system to closely manage and monitor claims (new and old) from the time they are reported until closed out. Responsible for determining whether a claim is eligible for WC, communicating that to the claimant, and when necessary ensuring that a treatment and return to work plan is developed and adhered to. In addition, a considerable amount of this positions time will be dedicated to working with the company doctor(s) and nurse(s) managing claims. When the doctor is seeing patients, this person will be expected to be present working with the doctor to deliver timely results.
  • Coordinate all industrial hygiene activities including medical surveillance, air monitoring, noise, hazard communication, laser, ventilation, radiation, chemical approval, etc.
  • Coordinate the fire prevention programs including routine inspections and testing, issue hot work permits, and be the Company liaison with the property insurance carrier and local fire authorities. 
  • Assist with the hazard communications program including maintaining a SDS for every hazardous material in the facility.  This would also include the new chemical approval process.
  • Help coordinate and manage the plant's hearing conservation and noise programs. Ensure appropriate noise monitoring is conducted.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with other legislative and regulatory standards and requirements such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, personal protective equipment, machine guarding, electrical safety, etc.
  • Assist engineering with new and modified equipment design reviews and approval, ventilation and preventive maintenance issues.
  • Help to develop, coordinate and oftentimes provide the mandatory education/training required by OSHA and other government agencies.
  • Provide support and information to corporate safety, legal, labor relations, risk management, manufacturing, engineering, medical and human resources as directed and needed.

Qualifications

BS Safety Management or related field and 1-3 years full-time safety and health experience.  ASP preferred.
